An ATS panel (Automatic Transfer Switch panel) is an electrical control center that automatically switches a building's power from the main utility source to a backup generator or other standby source during an outage, and then switches it back when the main power returns, ensuring uninterrupted power without manual intervention — crucial for hospitals, data centers, and businesses. Key functions: continuously monitors utility power for voltage and frequency; detects an outage when power drops below safe limits; signals the standby generator to start and warm up; transfers the electrical load once the generator is ready; restores power to the grid when stable, then shuts down the generator after a cooldown period. Components: a transfer switch (the core switching mechanism, e.g. contactors), a microprocessor controller managing logic, timings and protections, and a metal enclosure housing the components.
